Stars in the Blackness of Night

Somewhere in the night there is a child
looking past the blackness of midnight into the stars,
stars that give her hope–little pinpricks of light
reminding her that dawn will come, bringing
with it a new day, a new hope, and a new beginning.

These are the same stars that shine upon us all:
the girl in the sleepy bubble wrapped town
dreaming of excitement,
the boy in the war torn streets of a devastated city
praying for peace,
the man in the shiny plastic city,
a mask on his face, lies dripping from his lips,
the widow in her house, telling her children
stories of the father who will never return.

How is it possible, when
we  breathe the same air
we sing the same melodies,
are warmed by the same sun,
and when we are all one people of one planet,
how is it, that we are separated into such different worlds?
Why is it that we speak against injustice,
yet everyday a child is forced to choose
between his own life, or the life of his loved ones?
Why is it that one child goes hungry, while another
complains over his food?
Why must one person work for everything,
while another has it handed to them?

When this is happening, why do we feud?
Why aren’t we working towards fixing these flaws?
How many fields shall be dyed red,
how many families torn apart,
how many needless tears be shed
until we realize that we are one people
in one world
with the same goals:
life, liberty, and happiness.

Somewhere in the night there are children
gazing up at the stars, all dreaming.
They are the future.
They are the ones who are dreaming
of peace, of freedom, of equality.
They will be the ones to speak and take action,
to slowly fill the separation between these different worlds
and by paving a way for us children,
we will become the stars in the blackness of the night,
the little pinpricks of hope
that remind you a new day is dawning
and better days are yet to come.
